Travel: Experience Heaven at Dusit Thani Bangkok
It is always a joy to visit the Dusit Thani Bangkok. Each stay at this “institutionalised hotel landmark” feels really like home. Actually, it feels more like heaven as the 517-room and executive suite hotel would immortalise through its world-class hospitality and the varied cuisines from its nine food and beverage outlets. After all, Dusit Thani means “a town in Heaven” in Thai.
To the Thais, Dusit refers to the fourth of seven levels of Heaven. King Rama VI, whose statute stands across the road from the hotel at the entrance of Lumpini Park, added Thani in his creation of an utopian town where everyone lives in freedom and happiness.
Dusit Thani was opened in February 1970, thanks to the vision of the Chairperson of Dusit International, Thanpuying Chanut Piyaoui. She envisaged creating a deluxe hotel with modern comforts and interiors fitted with genuine Thai artworks and decorations reflecting classical motifs.
Despite the proliferation of many five star hotels from foreign competitors over the years, this premier Thai hotel is still holding its ground very well for these obvious reasons.
The hotel is strategically located opposite the expansive Lumpini Park, the green lung of Bangkok with its wide boulevards and lakes. More importantly, it is adjacent to both the skytrain (Saladaeng) and the subway (Silom) stations. An added bonus is its proximity to shopping and office complexes, and entertainment centres. And if you go during the Songkran (Water) festival in April, you will witness the revelry at its doorsteps. The whole stretch of Silom Road will be closed to traffic and you can soak (pun intended) in the fun and action by just walking into the gigantic human wall of frolicking youth.
2. Food and Beverage Outlets
When it comes to wining and dining, the guests will be spoilt for choice. There are nine restaurants and four bars & lounges, probably the most comprehensive range for any five star hotels in Thailand. This writer had dined at all the restaurants over the years and had not been disappointed every time. The list of restaurants includes Benjarong (Thai), D’Sens (French), Thien Duong (Vietnamese), Shogun (Japanese), The Mayflower (Chinese), il cielo (Italian), Hamilton’s Steak House (Western), The Pavilion (International) and Dusit Gourmet (Deli). I always make a beeline for the crab cakes served at Hamilton’s Steak House when I drop by this hotel. They are simply to die for.
3. Devarana Spa
Practically all 5-star hotels in Bangkok host a good spa. At Dusit Thani, it is an award-winning urban sanctuary called Devarana which is a Sanskrit word for “garden in heaven” The whole approach is focused on pampering and wellness, deploying Thai health and beauty practices culled from age-old therapies, complemented with modern knowledge of treatments that balance the body, mind and spirit.
One of the signature packages is the two-and-a-half hour Heavenly Nantha Garden Experience. Nantha in Thai literature describes a garden with magical flowers and herbs situated at heaven’s gate. To create the heavenly experience, the spa uses pink lotus, champaca with aromatic blends of ylang ylang and jasmine for the bath and body scrub treatment. The massage combines the pressures of Thai, Ayurveda and Shiatsu techniques with Swedish and Aromatherapy influences which is sure to send you to cloud seven.
4) Recreation facilities
For travellers on the road who need to have their workout fix, Dusit Thani is a perfect fit. At the DFiT fitness studio, there are a host of exercise machines to match any need. The swimming pool is not huge but the hotel makes up for it by having aerobic studios, a squash court, a golf school and driving range on their premises. You can practise your swing and the rates are pretty reasonable too, with just THB50 (S$2) for 50 balls and THB100 for the hire of a club.
For the business travellers, opt for the Dusit Club and higher accommodation. This will gain you access to the Dusit Club Lounge and other benefits. The Dusit Grand Room as an example is luxurious. It has 60 sqm of separated living, bedroom, bathroom and dressing space. It is most unusual to have four sets of sliding doors in the room but from a practical point of view, they are necessary to demarcate all the functional areas. With the availability of WiFi, two TV sets (one in the living room and the other in the bedroom), and a working desk, one can turn the room into a temporary office. And if you want to indulge yourself a bit further, choose one of the Thai Heritage Suites which are named after ancient Thai cities.
