Annual vessel arrival tonnage at the Port of Singapore crossed the two-billion gross tonne (GT) mark for the first time, setting a new milestone in the country’s maritime history, the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said on Tuesday.
MPA said this reflected good growth of the Port of Singapore despite uncertainties in the global economy.
It noted that to date, vessel arrival tonnage for 2011 has grown by more than 10 per cent, compared with the same period last year.
The one-billion GT mark in annual vessel arrival tonnage was first crossed in 2004.
