Singapore Launches 5-year Technology Roadmap

As part of its ongoing efforts to stay ahead of the technology curve, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) Friday launched the five-year Infocomm Technology Roadmap (ITR) to chart the trends and future development of the global technology landscape.
Launched in consultation with the industry, government agencies, researchers and academia, the ITR highlights nine key technology themes to guide organisations planning to integrate technology into operations.
The nine themes are Big Data, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, ICT and Sustainability, Comms of the Future, Social Media, New Digital Economy, User Interface and Internet of Things.
“We believe that it is vital for organisations to understand where the technologies are heading, so that we can stay ahead of the infocomm innovation and adoption curve,” said Leong Mun Yuen, Chief Technology Officer at IDA.
One example cited of the emerging technologies is the possible convergence of Internet of Things, User Interface and Big Data that can lead to a future home where electrical appliances may be able to communicate with each other.
“Infocomm technology is firmly embedded in the way we work, live, learn and interact. It is important that we keep abreast of the latest development of infocomm technologies and assess their potential in terms of how they may impact or even disrupt our lives,” noted IDA’s Chief Executive Officer Ronnie Tay.
The ITR roadmap adopted a systematic process to ensure that the most relevant themes were selected and presented in the report. The process was broken down into four phases in chronological order, namely ‘Scan’, ‘Engagement’, ‘Deep-dive’, and ‘Collaborate’.
“Currently, we are at the ‘Collaborate’ stage where we welcome invaluable feedback and insights from the public to improve the roadmap and develop a shared technology vision,” added Leong.
The newest roadmap came about after a year-long process of engaging researchers, organisations and educational institutes for input.
