Indonesia’s gross domestic product grew by 6.5 per cent in 2011 on the back of strong household consumption and private investment, a government official said Monday.

“Indonesia’s economy grew 6.5 per cent year-on-year compared to 2010,” Central Statistics Agency spokesman Suryamin said.

The results, which are the latest in a string of positive economic news for Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, come amid government forecasts for a 6.7 per cent economic expansion this year.

Indonesia, which has a population of 240 million people, has seen its economy expand steadily in recent years, posting 6.5 per cent growth in the fourth quarter last year, and 6.1 per cent annual growth in 2010.
