La Villa, owned by the Senso Group, is located at the old River Valley Primary School in Singapore. La Villa, meaning ‘The House’, comprises an indoor dining area, alfresco dining, a bar and an open garden. It is spacious and yet secluded, making it the perfect venue for a dinner date. There is ample parking and the restaurant is conveniently accessible from both the business centre and Orchard Road.
The interior is bright and cheery with white-washed walls, while the wooden furniture and ceiling beams add to the casual ambience, completed by the outdoor patio that exudes an air of relaxed and informal charm. It is relaxing to have a drink at the patio with the sound of the traffic droning by in the distance. The restaurant can seat 80 in the air-conditioned interior and 70 in the outdoor patio.
The S$28++ per person set lunch at La Villa is value for money and the menu changes every week. Set lunches are available from Mondays to Fridays except public holidays. Recently, we dropped by at La Villa and ordered the set lunch.
For the starter, there were three choices – Torta Pasqualina Ligurian style spinach and ricotta pie with egg stuffing; or Grilled asparagus wrapped with Parma ham in vanilla flavoured balsamic reduction sauce; or Soup of the day, which was mushroom soup. Our party of four sampled all three choices.
The Torta Pasqualina Ligurian style spinach and ricotta pie with egg stuffing was given an unusual treatment. It was served as a flat pie filled with spinach and egg. Most important of all, it was tasty. The grilled asparagus wrapped with Parma ham also did not disappoint. The ham gave the asparagus a tinge of saltiness and it was very well executed as a dish in itself. This was accompanied by some salads on the side. The mushroom soup, however, did not stand out.
For the main courses, the choices were – Prawn and egg plant cannelloni with beetroot sauce; or Braised lamb shoulder with mashed potatoes and olives; or Pizza topped with green asparagus, Parma ham and feta cheese. We did not order the prawn and egg plant cannelloni. The braised lamb was tender and well marinated. As the pizza was sizeable and too much for one person, we shared it among ourselves. We would have preferred the pizza to have a little more cheese for the topping.
There were only two choices for dessert – Dark chocolate mousse in chocolate cup with toasted pistachios; or Cake of the Day. For an additional charge of S$2, you can top off the cake with a scoop of ice cream. There was a choice of either a coconut or cheese cake on that day.
Desserts at La Villa were good. The dark chocolate mousse was sinfully rich and yet not too sweet. The coconut cake was unusual and it went down very well with the freshly brewed cup of tea. Tea or coffee was served as part of the set lunch.
The wait staff were friendly and attentive. They topped up our glasses of water constantly. It was too hot to sit at the outdoor patio for lunch in the afternoon. For dinner, this might be a good option as the patio overlooks a small garden and field.
