Craving for Teppanyaki?  A good place to visit is Shima Restaurant at Singapore’s Goodwood Park Hotel.  Established in 1980, Shima is one of the oldest and authentic Japanese restaurants in Singapore.  It has built a loyal following with its reputation of serving consistently fresh, quality food.

We checked out its Teppanyaki buffet lunch recently.  Priced at S$39.90++ for adults and S$24++ for children, the buffet lunch came with appetiser, main course and dessert.

For appetisers, we started off with prawn tempura, followed by shisamo tempura, salmon sashimi and California handroll.  You can ask for a second helping of any of the appetisers being served.  The appetisers were good and the salmon sashimi was fresh.  Also, the portion served to us was generous.  This definitely got us in the mood for savouring the main course.

We got to see the chef cooking in front of us for every dish of the main course.  He made cooking look really simple.  The first main course he cooked for us was beef, which was cut into cubes and he apportioned them proportionately to the diners.  The beef was soft and succulent.  Next was the chicken, made fragrant by the sauce added while stir-frying.  The salmon, which followed, was given a dash of soya sauce and it was cooked just right.

The prawns served were big and crunchy.  Although the menu stated that the availability of oysters was seasonal, we were in luck as there were oysters on that day.  The oysters were cooked with the flesh still soft.  It was heavenly!

The fried rice with garlic was served with the mixed vegetables and miso soup.  There was so much to eat that we could not finish the rice.

Dessert was fresh fruit and it came with either coffee or tea to round off the meal.

As a pioneer, Shima is definitely the place to go for Teppanyaki.  The quantity and quality is still consistent after all these years.  The serving staff are attentive and polite.  The tables are placed quite close to one another and conversations have to be kept at a low level.
