Gordon Grill, established in 1963 and located at Singapore’s Goodwood Park Hotel, serves some of the best steaks and grilled dishes in town.  Yet, we tend to forget its existence especially with the opening of so many new restaurants in town.

Helmed by Chef Gan Swee Lai who believes in giving guests a memorable dining experience, Gordon Grill features a meat trolley service, just like what good old European grill rooms used to have.

The restaurant has also won many awards and welcomed several Michelin-star chefs from different countries as part of the hotel’s regular Guest Chef promotions.

In sync with the hotel, the restaurant has a classic-contemporary design. This gives diners a relaxed and cosy ambience in which to enjoy their food. The paintings adorning the wall complement the layout of the restaurant. On the whole, service here is attentive, friendly and helpful.

The restaurant offers a Big-on-Small Lunch Menu that costs S$48++ for three courses and S$58++ for four courses. For the appetiser sampler, you get to choose three items from a menu of six. To get a taste of all the appetisers, we picked different combinations.  The appetisers we had were cold angel hair pasta with crabmeat, seaweed and white truffle oil; Scottish salmon confit with pickled cucumber and sesame shoyu vinaigrette; Wagyu beef carpaccio with celeriac remoulade and parmesan cheese shavings; roasted duck foie gras with pear and rhubarb chutney; king scallop with Spanish ham, green asparagus and morel jus; and braised escargot with red wine jus, garlic puree and mild spiced butter.  All the six appetisers were winners.  The variety offered should please all sorts of taste buds.  Special mention must be given to the roasted duck foie gras, which had a slightly crispy outer layer and paired with the perfect condiments.

The chef was generous with the ingredients in the cold angel hair pasta with crabmeat, seaweed and white truffle oil.  The truffle oil lent a subtle fragrance to the pasta.

For the main course, diners get to pick one out of five dishes.  As a party, we had the grilled Australian lamb chops with cous-cous, ratatouille and olive jus; US beef fillet with braised cheek in Bordelaise sauce and seasonal mushrooms; roasted jumbo quail with duck foie gras, mesclun salad, walnut and raspberry dressing; and glazed Yorkshire pork loin with potato fondant, melted spinach and puy lentil ragout.  The only dish we did not try was the baked ‘fresh catch’ with a light seafood risotto and tomato vinaigrette.

The main courses were good and the meats were of high quality.  The lamb chops were tender and juicy.  Even the beef fillet with braised cheek was very well marinated and soft, both at the edge of the knife and on the tip of the tongue.  The roasted jumbo quail was moist and not overcooked, while the glazed Yorkshire pork loin was heavenly!   The pork loin served in most restaurants often tastes like something straight out of the freezer into the microwave.  Here, at Gordon Grill, the pork loin was perfectly done and matched with the right sauce.

For desserts, diners get to select two items from a list of four. The desserts offered were William pear with chocolate tart and vanilla bean ice cream; Assiette of poached rhubarb, crème fraiche and strawberry granite; bitter chocolate mousse, spiced bread and orange panna cotta; and pistachio crème brulee with almond crust.  All the desserts did not disappoint.  We particularly liked the bitter chocolate mousse, spiced bread and orange panna cotta.  It gave a slightly bitter and sweet sensation.  The William pear with chocolate tart had good texture.  It was not too heavy on the taste buds and did a delectable duet with the vanilla bean ice cream.

Gordon Grill is one restaurant that has withstood the test of time.  Before the food arrived, they served complimentary warm bread – diners had a choice of focaccia, rye bread or onion bread.  The fragrant onion bread was crusty on the outside and soft inside.

The restaurant also has an adjoining Highland Bar, which is an ideal place for an aperitif or an after-dinner drink.

A meal at Gordon Grill is memorable and the restaurant is the perfect place for a romantic dinner or to celebrate special occasions.  It is also a good place for a quiet business lunch.
