I have always tried Long Beach Seafood Restaurant outlets at Dempsey and the East Coast in Singapore. Recently, I decided to check out their outlet at Kallang.
Crustaceans ruled the set menu that I ordered. The appetiser was Fresh Crab Meat in Braised Fish Maw Soup. The soup had a slight fishy taste, which could be masked easily with a dash of vinegar.
Then came the entrées. We traded the Bhutan Live Prawns for the House Specialty Prawns where they were fried with garlic. The fragrant smell of the garlic greeted me once the dish was set on the table. The prawns were cooked to perfection – tender and juicy, flavoured by a delectable combination of spices.
The next dish was the signature specialty of this restaurant chain, which was established in 1946: The original Black Pepper Crab. Cracking open huge pincers one after another, I devoured white, juicy flesh, which was soft and savoury and coated with melted butter. The peppery blend of spices was the “shiok”, or highly pleasing, factor.
While I was busy chomping on the fat pincers, Braised Ee Fu Noodles with Fresh Crab Meat were served. The greasy look of the noodles put me off initially. But don’t judge a dish on appearance alone. The noodles were full of flavour especially when fried with finely shredded crab meat. They tasted pretty good.
The last course was the fried fish – the only main course without shells. I had looked forward to this dish, anticipating yet another delightful treat. But, the fish looked dry as if it had been left in the pan for too long. It was also too salty for my liking.
I had Black Glutinous Rice with Ice Cream for dessert. Honestly, I had tasted better glutinous rice with a richer taste elsewhere, but the ice cream was a saving grace for the dish. Its creamy sweetness complemented the glutinous rice, adding a refreshing touch to an otherwise ordinary Pulut Hitam.
The restaurant chain’s outlet in Kallang – Long Beach King Seafood, which opened three years ago – is the biggest outlet to date with 14 VIP rooms, a grand dining hall and outdoor seating for those who prefer alfresco dining.
The friendly staff and excellent ambience make it an ideal venue for family reunions and corporate dinners. The meal I had at Long Beach was the set lunch at S$268++ for four persons, which proved sufficient for our party of five.
A piece of advice if you want to get attentive service: Go to the restaurant on a weekday.
We were there on a Thursday afternoon and the place was fairly empty. We even managed to get a parking space right next to the entrance. The restaurant is packed during weekends.
